Donkey Kong | Atari | 1983 | animals bludgeons cartoon cartridge constructionsite did donkeykong donkeykonglike earth elevators harmfultouch instantdeath jumping ladders langinsignificant lethalobjects lives mario mario-universe powerups primates rescue score walking | Released in the arcades in 1981, Donkey Kong was not only Nintendo's first real smash hit for the company but marked the introduction of two of their most popular mascots: Mario (originally "Jumpman") and Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong is a platform-action game that has Mario scale four different industrial-themed levels (construction zone, cement factory, an elevator-themed level, and removing rivets from girders) in an attempt to save the damsel in distress, Pauline, from the big ape before the timer runs out. Once the rivets are removed from the final level, Donkey Kong falls, and the two lovers are reunited. From there, the levels start over at a higher difficulty. Along the way, Mario must dodge a constant stream of barrels, "living" fireballs, and spring-weights. Although not as powerful as in other future games, Mario can find a hammer which allows him to destroy the barrels and fireballs for a limited amount of time. Additionally, Mario can also find Pauline's hat, purse, and umbrella for additional bonus points. Donkey Kong is also notable for being one of the first complete narratives in video game form, told through simplistic cut scenes that advance the story. It should also be noted that in many conversions of the original coin-op game for early 1980's consoles and computer systems, Donkey Kong only used two or three of the original levels, with the cement factory most often omitted.******RX8031 16k cartridge. 3 common variations of this game exist. Jet Set Willy | Tynesoft | 1986 | cassette claiming disappearingplatforms falldamage harmfultouch instantdeath jetsetwilly lives platformer timelimit walking willyminer | Miner Willy, intrepid explorer and nouveau-riche socialite, has been reaping the benefits of his fortunate discovery in Surbiton. He has a yacht, a cliff-top mansion, an Italian housekeeper and a French cook, and hundreds of new found friends who REALLY know how to enjoy themselves at a party. His housekeeper, Maria, however, takes a very dim view of all his revelry, and finally after a particularly boisterous thrash she puts her foot down. When the last of the louts disappears down the drive in his Aston Martin, all Willy can think about is crashing out in his four-poster. But Maria won't let him into his room until ALL the discarded glasses and bottles have been cleared away. Can you help Willy out of his dilemma? He hasn't explored his mansion properly yet (it IS a large place and he HAS been VERY busy) and there are some very strange things going on in the further recesses of the house (I wonder what the last owner WAS doing in his laboratory the night he disappeared). You should manage O.K though you will probably find some loonies have been up on the roof and I would check down the road and on the beach if I was you. Good luck and don't worry, all you can lose in this game is sleep. | labelimagesubject |

Crystal Castles | Atari;Video 61 (Atari) | 1988 | anthroprotagonist cartridge claiming instantdeath lives score ursineprotagonist walking | Atari never published this 16k prototype cartridge. Video 61 published it later in 1988.***Actually Atari Corp. did publish this game in 1988, four years after its finishing and planed release in 1984. Before the 1988 release, some minor improvements (sloppy hacks) by someone increased the memory requirements above 16k. The hacks did make the game even more like the arcade version but they hardly seems worth 48k. This made it unplayable on Atari 400 and 800 machines (without soldering). It was only playable on machines with 64k, such as the 600XL and XEGS. The XE branded version of the game hacked by the same unknown programmer was published at the same time. To play this game on a 16k machine you'll need the Video 61 version. [Zerothis] | labelimageminimize |
